Interim champion approved due to Martinez injury

The World Boxing Council (WBC) authorized a fight for the interim middleweight title due to the injury of Argentine Sergio ‘Maravilla’ Martínez, absolute champion, his general secretary, Mauricio Sulaimán, announced today.
INTERMartínez confirmed to the WBC last December that his recovery from his injuries, to one hand and one knee, will be complete until after March 2014, for which the WBC decided to approve an interim title fight.
This championship will be contested by the Mexican Marco Antonio Rubio and the Italian Domenico Spada, first and second classified in the division, at an early date, Sulaiman said.
According to press reports, Martínez is currently in negotiations to face Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto in June next June.
Sulaiman informed that the Ukrainian Vitali Klitschko has asked to be declared emeritus champion of absolute weights, which means that he will leave the title although he will maintain the right to dispute it when he decides to return to activity.
The secretary general of the WBC explained that once this process is completed, the possibility that the title will be put at stake will be opened with a fight between the Canadian Bermane Stiverne and the American Chris Arreola.
In the super flyweight, the WBC declared free negotiation for the fight of the Thai champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai against the Mexican Carlos Cuadras and, in case of not reaching an agreement, there will be an auction on February 7, said the WBC official.
Sulaiman confirmed the holding of a world boxing summit in Shanghai (China) next June, during which registration with a Chinese boxing federation body will be completed and a regional championship will be established.
Next June, the WBC will hold the first world women’s boxing convention in Tijuana (Mexico) in which the environment and current conditions of the fights will be reviewed, in addition to treating doctors and generals, said Sulaimán. EFE
