The Italian Fabio Fognini was crowned champion of the Open Tennis of Brazil 2018 in a match that at times gave an advantage to his Chilean opponent Nicolás Jarry and that after an hour and a half ended (1-6), (6-1) (6-4).
Fognini and Jarry met for the first time in a long-suffering but relatively quick match, which showed the spectators the best of his playing strategy.
The Italian, second seeded of the contest and who made his first final in the Brazilian Open, was defeated in a sudden way (6-1) by the Chilean in the first set, but he resumed his strategy in the second where with a forceful 6-1 again showed his skill.
The third set, which ended 6-4 and with which the dispute was defined in favor of the Italian, had an even start that showed a courageous Jarry but ended with a determined game by Fegnini.
Fognini, 30, reached the final after closing the sequence of victories in Sao Paulo of the three-time consecutive champion of the Brazilian tournament, the Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas, with sets of 6/4 and 6/2.
For his part, Jarry, the revelation of the tournament, started the match strongly but declined in the second set after receiving a forceful response from Fognini.
During the third and last set, the Chilean defended his participation in the final, but could not with the agility of the Italian Fognini.
Jarry, who is 22 years old, will climb to at least 61st position in the ranking (he currently occupies 73rd) and is the first Chilean to reach an ATP tournament final since Fernando González, in Viña del Mar in 2009.
At the Brasil Open, the only Chilean champion was Nicolas Massú, in the 2006 edition.
The Open of Tennis Brazil, an ATP 250 tournament, takes place this week at the Ibirapuera Park Gymnasium, in Sao Paulo, on an indoor brick dust surface. EFE
