Kvitova defeats Garcia and continues to hunt for the fourth title in Madrid

Czech defending champion Petra Kvitova added her third win this week at the Mutua Madrid Open by defeating Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-3 and reaching the quarterfinals.

The triple tournament champion and recent winner in Stuttgart needed only 76 minutes to get rid of Garcia and advance in the tournament, where she will now face Kiki Bertens, her rival in last year’s final. The Dutch defeated Latvian Anastasija Sevastova, 6-1, 6-2.

With the points obtained in Stuttgart and as she defends those of last year in Madrid, Kvitova has no option this week to fight for number one, but she does need to reach the final to have options and stay in second place in the WTA.

The fight for number one centers on the current queen, the Japanese Naomi Osaka, who this Wednesday defeated the Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnova, 6-2, 6-3, and the Romanian Simona Halep, who defeated the Slovakian Viktoria Kuzmova , by a resounding 6-0 and 6-0.

Halep, a two-time champion in Madrid, has to win the tournament and for Osaka to fall before the semi-finals to do so. The Japanese, who lost in the first round last year, would secure her position if she reaches the penultimate round. EFE.
