The Mexican Mariana Juárez today retained the world bantamweight title of the World Council of Boxing (WBC) by defeating Japan’s Terumi Nuki by unanimous decision at the Arena México in the capital.
The 38-year-old champion achieved the 50th victory of her professional career as she completed her fifth successful defense of the title in the 53,524 kilogram division.
Juárez (50-9-4, 18 knockouts) beat Nuki (10-4-0, 7 knockouts) for the second time in his career, whom he had defeated in July last year also by unanimous decision.
The 29-year-old challenger was looking for revenge and from the first round, she left with everything on the rival. For the third round, Juárez left behind the strategy of holding on and began to throw punches more aggressively, a situation that lifted the public from their seats to encourage the local.
The 118-pound champion endured the punishment of the oriental thanks to a correct preparation work in the gym.
With a conservative plan, Juárez went forward until the seventh of the ten episodes to which the fight was agreed.
The world champion suffered a cut to the head in the tenth and with a bloody face she withstood the final onslaught of her opponent.
The judges’ cards marked votes of 98-91, 98-91 and 97-92 in favor of the boxer residing in Mexico City.
With this result, the possibility opens up for Mariana Juárez to face her compatriot Jackie Nava, who also had a successful return this Saturday.
After a year and a half in retirement, Nava (34-4-3, 15 knockouts), former Mexican world champion, again defeated the Venezuelan Alys Sánchez (15-5-1.4 knockouts) in the super bantamweight division. .
The South American no longer came out for the eighth inning and the 38-year-old Nava was declared the winner on the fast track.
