Márquez will never fight Cotto because De La Hoya doesn’t want to, says Beristáin
There can never be a fight between the Mexican Juan Manuel Márquez and the Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto because the Puerto Rican fighter has as promoter the American Oscar de la Hoya, for whom Márquez and his team are “nothing”, coach Ignacio ‘Nacho’ assured today Beristain.
“(Juan) is never going to fight Cotto because Cotto is signed with De la Hoya and we are nothing to De la Hoya”, declared an emphatic Beristáin to the local press.
“That (fight) cannot be and never could be,” added the manager, who this day received an award from the World Council of Boxing (CMB) for his outstanding career.
Last March, Márquez, world champion in the featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight and super lightweight divisions, conditioned his return to the ring to fight Miguel Cotto to the Puerto Rican going down from middleweight to welterweight, and that the appointment is not in Nueva York, but now Beristain questioned her.
The 43-year-old Mexican has not fought since May 17, 2014, when he beat American Mike Alvarado, but his promoter Fernando Beltrán has aired that he will fight on July 29.
Beristáin recalled that Juan Manuel has been in the gym for the last few months, trained hard and “he looks very good and will surprise when they see him.” EFE
