McLaren leaves Honda to join Renault

The McLaren team, in which the Spanish Fernando Alonso is a member, has reached an agreement with the manufacturer Honda to end their relationship and, as of 2018, mount Renault power units, according to Motorsport.com.

The lack of reliability and performance has been a constant since Honda returned to Formula One in 2015 as a supplier of engines to McLaren.

According to that portal, McLaren has reached an agreement with Renault for three seasons, until 2020, when the current regulation of propellants will change.

This circumstance could accelerate the renewal of the double Asturian world champion (2005 and 2006, with Renault) with the Woking team, which since his return, in 2015, has not achieved by far the expected performance, with three fifths -one in 2015 and two in 2016- as the best positions since then and a sixth as the best place so far this year.

However, sources close to Alonso, who during this season reiterated that the main problem lay in the Japanese motorcyclist and that “from September” he would begin to reveal his future, told Efe that “for now, there is nothing new” in what it refers to.

Alonso, with 32 victories, is the third most successful driver among those active in Formula One, behind triple English world champion Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), with 59, and quadruple German world champion Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari), with 46; despite the fact that the last triumph of the Asturian genius dates back more than four years: in May 2013, at the Spanish Grand Prix.
