Former Algerian international goalkeeper Mehdi Cerbah, who was part of the remembered team that defeated Federal Germany (FRG) in their group for the 1982 World Cup in Spain, died on Friday at the age of 68, the official APS agency said.
Cerbah, who had been ill for a long time, began his career in 1969 at USM Algiers, before joining JS Kabylia in 1972 and being there for eight seasons. From there he went to RC Kouba (1980-1982).
With the Algerian team he lived his most important moment when he participated in the 1982 World Cup and, above all, beat the Germans 2-1 in his first game, played in Gijón.
Algeria, which also beat Chile (3-2) in that World Cup, could not, however, overcome that group in the first phase.
Cerbah participated with Algeria in 62 international matches.(AFP)
