Mercedes team minibus stolen at gunpoint

A minibus carrying Mercedes team personnel was robbed at gunpoint on Friday as it left the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo, where the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix will be held on Sunday.

«Certain members of my team were robbed last night when leaving the circuit here in Brazil. They fired bullets, they pointed a gun at their heads. It’s distressing, ”tweeted four-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

“This happens here every year. Formula 1 and the teams must do more, there are no excuses, “he added.

“They stole valuables but the most important thing is that no one was injured and that everyone is fine,” explained the spokesman for the Mercedes team.

Members of the Williams team and the International Automobile Federation (FIA) also had several altercations but were able to avoid being robbed, BBC journalist Andrew Benson added on Twitter.

Crime is a recurring problem in the Grand Prix organized in Latin America. In 2016, in Mexico, a member of the Mercedes team suffered a similar episode and, in 2010, it was the British driver Jenson Button who was the victim of an armed attack.

These incidents occurred at a time when the future of the Brazilian race is up in the air as the Interlagos circuit is up for sale.
