Mets-Yankees to play on 9/11 20th anniversary

In what promises to be quite an emotional night, the Mets and Yankees will meet at Citi Field on September 11, 2021, marking the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York City.

“I can’t imagine how shocking that event will be,” Bombers manager Aaron Boone said. “Especially because of everything we’ve been through this year, that could add another aspect to how emotional the day and the game will be. We can’t wait to be part of that and it will have the magic it deserves ”.

The Mets famously helped the city heal after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, playing the first professional game in New York 10 days later. Mike Piazza hit a two-run home run to give the Queens team the lead over the Braves in the eighth inning, in what became one of the most memorable games in franchise history.

The Mets and Yankees met exclusively in the middle of the season, but when Interleague games began to be held each day since 2013, that created the possibility that the New York rivals series will be played in September. (GG) (Taken MLB.Com)
