Mexican boxer ‘Canelo’ Álvarez will not fight in September

Mexican boxer Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, world champion of middleweights by three associations, will not fight in September, as planned, his promoter reported.

‘Canelo’ is a middleweight champion by the International Federation (IBF), the World Council (WBC) and the World Boxing Association (WBA).

«As a Mexican it is a responsibility and an honor to represent my country both in May and in September. Those are my dates. However, as a champion in various categories, I must deliver the most exciting and competitive fights possible. Therefore, we have decided this to promote the best fight and with the best possible opponent, “said the Aztec in a statement from Golden Boy Promotions.

Álvarez, who turns 29 this Thursday, is used to fighting in the two great national holidays of his country, for May 5 and the weekend of September 15, but this year he will break with his tradition in search of an opponent who convinces you and your next appointment could be in December, as it already happened in 2018.

In his last fight, “Canelo” defeated by unanimous decision the night of May 4-5 in Las Vegas in a unification duel to American Daniel Jacobs to become the best middleweight of today.

The Mexican has a 52-1-2 record. His only stumble came against the legendary Floyd Mayweather Jr. A third fight against the Kazakh Gennady Golovkin, whom he defeated a year ago, snatching his undefeated and his belts, seems more than ever a distant possibility. AFP
