Mexican Nery describes a triumph over Japanese Yamanaka as a feat

The Mexican Luis ‘el Pantera’ Nery, who this Tuesday conquered the world bantamweight title of the World Council of Boxing (WBC) called his four-round TKO win over Japan’s Shinsuke Yamanaka in Kyoto a “great feat”.

The 22-year-old Nery vastly outscored Yamanaka, who had been a solid champion and was attempting his thirteenth title defense.

«It is a great feat that I did, to beat a great champion and at home. I still don’t believe it, ”said ‘el Pantera’ in a conference call made by the WBC in Mexico City.

“The third round I hit him hard with my left hand and that’s when I realized I could finish him off,” he added.

Nery hopes to make his first defense in Tijuana, his hometown.

The bantamweight division of the WBC has traditionally been dominated by Mexicans. The title has been won by 21 fighters, including Rubén Olivares, Chucho Castillo, Carlos Zárate and Lupe Pintor.

With his victory, Nery extended his undefeated to 24 fights, 18 on the fast track, while the defeated Japanese champion accumulated 27 wins, 19 before the limit, a draw and two losses. EFE
