Mexican Novoa loses strawweight crown

Mexican boxer Oswaldo “Gallito” Novoa retired after the ninth round against Thai Wanheng Menayothin in an evening in which he defended the strawweight crown of the World Boxing Council (WBC) on Thai soil.
Novoa threw in the towel after an even fight in which he was losing the points by the minimum in the eighth round (76-76, 75-77 and 73-79), but in which the differences widened after the ninth period, in which he accused fatigue.
The 29-year-old Thai, undefeated after 36 fights (36-0, 11 KO), had the support of the public and was able to lead the scores against the defending champion, 32 years old and 20 fights (14-5-1, 8 KO).
The fighter from Guadalajara, a blue corner and black and red shorts, took the initiative during most of the fight, although the local, a red corner and white and red pants, did not shy away from the exchanges of blows and was more accurate when launching the blows. .
While the Thai lowered his head to search for the body of the Mexican, he threw crochets and hooks, in which he risked in his attempt to find the KO
Wanheng, encouraged by an audience that celebrated all his offensives, showed a more conservative profile and managed to reach the end of the fourth round ahead of points, although none of the fighters abused the jabs, offering an intense fight.
The Latin boxer launched himself for all in the seventh round, without achieving clear blows that allowed him to come back and could only connect with the soft parts of the Thai, who defended himself well and connected some direct to the face of his opponent.
In the last two stages of the fight, Novoa showed strong fatigue, especially in the last round, in which he seemed to hurt Wanheng’s face from a crusader that sent him against the ropes.
Novoa reached the 105-pound title last February after knocking out Chinese Xiong Zhao Zhong at home, and managed to defend the belt for the first time against Nicaraguan Alcides Martinez in June whom he also defeated by KO.
Wanheng, for his part, had previously beaten Florante Condes, Roilo Golez and Raúl Pusta Jr., but the victory against Novoa is the greatest triumph of his sports career. EFE
