Muguruza knocks down Svitolina to reach the round of 16 at Roland Garros

The Spanish Garbiñe Muguruza, world number 19 and champion of the tournament in 2016, achieved a great victory over the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, ninth in the WTA ranking, by 6-3 and 6-3, in the third round of Roland Garros.

Muguruza, who scored her victory on the center court Philippe Chatrier, thus advanced to the round of 16, where she will face the American Sloane Stephens (7th), who had to work hard to beat the Slovenian Polona Hercog (71st) by 6-3 , 5-7 and 6-4.

“She is a player who finished here last year, who plays well on clay, so it will be a tough match,” Muguruza said of Stephens.

So far Svitolina had been a nightmare for Muguruza, who had lost in six of her seven previous meetings with the Ukrainian, who was cheered on from the stands by her boyfriend, French tennis player Gael Monfils.

In the first set, Muguruza was very aggressive from the beginning and broke the Ukrainian’s serve three times to take the set 6-3.

In the second set, Svitolina seemed to react by breaking the serve of the Caracas-born player in the fifth game, but then Muguruza got two ‘breaks’ and ended up taking the match with another partial 6-3.

It was the first serious test for Muguruza at this Roland Garros, after her victories in the first rounds against the American Taylor Townsend (98th) and the Swedish Johanna Larsson (172nd).

This victory continues to reinforce Muguruza’s confidence, in a clay court season in which she had had a lot of problems before Paris, which makes her to be cautious.

“I wish I felt as confident as I appear,” she admitted when asked about the security that she transmits on the track.

In Madrid, at the beginning of the month, she lost in her debut against the Croatian Petra Martic, while in Rome she reached the round of 16, but had to leave there against the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka due to discomfort in her left leg.

At Roland Garros, she reached the semi-finals last year, so she needs to get way ahead in the tournament so as not to risk a further decline in the WTA rankings.

«I don’t think much about how I feel. I simplify a lot. I do my homework and that’s it. I really like this tournament. I do not compare much with how I was in this or that year, that does not help, “he said. AFP
