Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal, number 1 in the world ranking, and German Alexander Zverev (7 / ATP), will be the top figures in the men’s team at the 2020 Mexican Tennis Open that will be played in Acapulco from February 24 to 29, they announced organizers.
“This year’s men’s draw is a mix of a lot of experience, starting with Rafael Nadal and established tour players like Zverev, (Nick) Kyrgios, (John) Isner, (Grigor) Dimitrov and (Stan) Wawrinka, and youngsters with a lot of talent like (Matteo) Berrettini, (Alex) De Miñaur, (Félix) Auger, Frizt and (Frances) Tiafoe ”, said Raúl Zurutuza, general director of the tournament.
“With these names, I am convinced that we will have a great show,” Zurutuza concluded at a press conference.
Nadal will seek his third title in Acapulco (he already won it in 2005 and 2013) and will try to dethrone the defending champion, Australian Nick Kyrgios (26 / ATP), who eliminated the Spanish in the second round of the 2019 edition of the Mexican tournament.
On the other hand, in 2020 the 20th edition of the women’s tournament will be played. On this occasion, the top figures announced by the WTA are the Americans Madison Keys (11 in the world ranking) and Sloane Stephens (25) who already won this Acapulco title in 2016.
The Chinese Yafang Wang (51 / WTA), champion in 2019, was confirmed to try to revalidate the title.
The Acapulco Open is an Open 500 category tournament for the ATP and International for the WTA that is played on a hard court and distributes a purse of 2.25 million dollars. AFP
