Nadal and Federer meet in the second round with Argentine rivals

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer continued to advance at Roland Garros, sealing their pass to the round of 16, where both will have Argentine opponents, Juan Ignacio Londero and Leonardo Mayer respectively.

Nadal, world number 2, had a delicate rival in the third round, the ‘former Top 10’ of Belgium David Goffin (29th), whom he beat in four rounds, 6-1, 6-3, 4-6 and 6- 3, while Federer (3rd) beat Norwegian Casper Ruud (63rd) 6-3, 6-1 and 7-6 (10/8).

«I see the game in a very positive way. He was a very difficult opponent, one of the most difficult opponents that could touch me in the third round, ”Nadal said, happy despite losing a set.

In the first two rounds, Nadal had faced two German players from the previous qualifying rounds (Yannick Hanfmann and Yannick Maden), whom he defeated in three comfortable heats.

Last year, Nadal had lost just one set on his way to the 11th title at Roland Garros and it had been in the quarterfinals, against Argentine Diego Schwartzman.

Nadal’s rival in the second round will be Argentine debutant Londero (78th), one of the revelations of the tournament, who beat Frenchman Corentin Moutet (110th) in five sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 5- 7 and 6-4.

Federer, champion of the tournament in 2009, for his part avoided having to play a fourth set and beat Casper Ruud, winning the third set tie-break.

After being far superior in the first two rounds, the 20-year-old Grand Slam champion from Basel had much more trouble in the third against the 20-year-old Norwegian.

“I am happy to be in the fourth round at Roland Garros, after not having played here for many years. My first goal is accomplished, “he later pointed out at a press conference, satisfied with his move to the second round.

His rival there will be Argentine Leonardo Mayer (68th), who beat French veteran Nicolas Mahut 3-6, 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 and 7-6 (7/3).

– Osaka will continue as number 1 –
In the women’s draw, the big news of the day was the elimination of the world number 2, the Czech Karolina Pliskova, who was clearly overtaken by the Croatian Petra Martic (31st) by a double 6-3.

That setback guarantees Japan’s Naomi Osaka to remain number 1 in the world after the Paris tournament.

Before the start of this Roland Garros, there were four players who aspired to snatch the world number 1 from Osaka, but none of them reached the second week of the tournament.

Germany’s Angelique Kerber (5th in the world) was eliminated in the first round and Czech Petra Kvitova (6th) was declared out due to injury moments before her first match in Paris.

Dutch Kiki Bertens (4th), champion earlier this month in Madrid, left at the start of her second-round match due to stomach problems.

Romanian Simona Halep, third in the world, is the defending champion at this Roland Garros and has no mathematical options to finish the tournament at number 1.

Naomi Osaka, who has had two difficult first rounds in which she had to battle not to be eliminated, will therefore not lose her throne in the WTA ranking no matter what she does for the rest of the tournament.

In the rest of the matches of the day, the victory of the Spanish Garbiñe Muguruza (19th), champion of Roland Garros in 2016, by a double 6-3 against the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina (9th) stood out.

The Caracas-born player will face the American Sloane Stephens (7th), runner-up last year in the round of 16. AFP
