Nadal crowned Montreal Masters 1000

Spanish first seed Rafael Nadal was crowned at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal by defeating eighth-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev with easy 6-3, 6-0 sets.

‘Rafa’ thus revalidated the title won last year and reached his 35th Masters 1000 trophy.

The Iberian had reached these instances by eliminating Frenchman Gael Monfils (N.16) in the semifinals due to the abandonment of his rival. Meanwhile, Medvedev did so at the expense of sixth-seeded compatriot Karen Khachanov 6-1, 7-6 (8/6).

In just one hour and 11 minutes, Nadal dispatched the Russian in all aspects of the game by beating him in winning points 24 to 11, in first serve effectiveness 82% to 61%, in addition to taking advantage of five double faults by his opponent.

The ATP number two won his first Canadian title in 2005 and also repeated in 2008, 2013 and last year in Toronto. The Canadian Masters 1000 alternates year by year between Toronto and Montreal.

Medvedev, one of the rising Russians on the circuit, had never faced Nadal, an 18-time Grand Slam champion.

Nadal will compete next week at the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, where he starts as second seed behind Serbian Novak Djokovic, first seed, a tournament that will serve to get in tune for the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the year that will begin on 26 August.

The Mallorcan thus won his third tournament of the year after the Masters 1000 in Rome and Roland Garros, bringing his career total to 83 titles.

– Zeballos-Granollers, win the doubles –
Shortly before, the pair made up of the Argentine Horacio Zeballos and the Spanish Marcel Granollers were crowned in the doubles of the tournament.

Zeballos / Granollers edged out the Dutch duo Wesley Koolhof and Robin Haase with a double 7-5.

It is the first tournament that Granollers and Zeballos play together and it will also be the first time that an Argentine enters the Top 10 in doubles. It was also the first time that an Argentine and a Spaniard win the trophy at this event since Manuel Orantes and Guillermo Vilas did it in Toronto in 1974.

The duo dominated with their serves throughout the match, putting pressure on the Dutch by hitting 85% of their first serves and winning 84% of those points. They did not face a break point in their 81-minute win.
