Nadal eliminates Struff and advances to the semifinals in Barcelona

The Spanish Rafa Nadal, world number 2, qualified for the semifinals of the Barcelona tournament, with a victory in the quarterfinals against the German Jan-Lennard Struff (51st in the ATP ranking) by a double 7-5.

Little by little, Nadal is recovering the good feelings, after his elimination last weekend against the Italian Fabio Fognini in the semifinals of Monte Carlo, which triggered doubts a month after Roland Garros.

After a difficult first game in Barcelona on Wednesday, against Argentine Leonardo Mayer, the Mallorcan had a more comfortable duel Thursday in the round of 16 against veteran Spanish David Ferrer, who was playing his penultimate tournament as a professional.

Against Struff, who on Thursday had surprised by eliminating Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (8th), Nadal had to face the resistance of the German, but ended up asserting his solidity.

In the first set he went 5-5, before making a ‘break’ that later allowed him to take the 7-5 sleeve.

The second set was not easier and had a similar script, with another ‘break’ by Nadal in the final part to decide the quarterfinal.

In the semifinals, Nadal will play against the winner of the last game on Friday, which measures Austrian Dominic Thiem (5th) against Argentine Guido Pella (28th).

In the other part of the table, the semi-final will be played by Russian Daniil Medvedev (14th) against Japanese Kei Nishikori (7th).

Medvedev cut the great run in the tournament of Chilean Nicolás Jarry (81st), who had entered the main draw as a ‘lucky loser’ and who had eliminated German Alexander Zverev (3rd) and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (43rd) in his previous matches. ).

Jarry, who was called up to the first round to cover a loss after losing in the qualifying round, this time fell to the Russian 6-3, 6-4.

Medvedev will face a Nishikori who defeated Spanish Roberto Carballés (104th) in the quarterfinals 6-4, 7-5.

The Barcelona Tournament, also known as the Conde de Godó Trophy, is disputed on brick dust and awards 503,015 euros to the winner, and 253,000 euros to the runner-up.
