“Nadal is the favorite”, sentence Djokovic

Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, world number 1, said two days before the start of Roland Garros, that he is clear that the favorite for the title is Spanish Rafa Nadal, second in the ATP ranking and eleven times champion on the clay of Paris.

Nadal beat Djokovic last Sunday in the final of the 1,000 Masters in Rome, the last big event before this second Grand Slam of the year.

«I said it in Italy. Nadal is the favorite to win this title. He has won this tournament so many times in his career that it would not be fair to choose someone other than him as the favorite, ”explained ‘Djoko’ at a press conference at the Roland Garros facilities.

“We had a good game in Rome. He won it because he was better. I have the feeling that I had a fantastic few weeks in Madrid and Rome before coming here, “he said.

In Madrid, Djokovic could indeed be proclaimed champion. Nadal had been eliminated in the semifinals by Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, who was later the Serbian’s victim in the last match.

Djokovic has won the last three Grand Slam titles (Wimbledon and US Open in 2018, Australian Open in 2019) and has a chance to continue with the fourth, Roland Garros, which he already won in 2016.

“This is the tournament that I have been preparing for in recent months. The motivation is higher in my case, to be the current champion in the four Grand Slam tournaments, “he stressed.

“Thanks to the public here, I was able to win this tournament in the past. Then I had that elbow problem that took me out of the Top 20, I had to come back. Now I am number 1. I have more confidence in myself and I hope to have two good weeks, “he wished.

Djokovic admitted that as a child he had Roland Garros as a reference tournament.

“There was no tennis tradition in my family. I fell madly in love with this sport when I was very young. When I was a child it was complicated, there was war, there was crisis. I watched tennis on television. That gave me strength. And Roland Garros was already a reference for me then, “he said. AFP
