Nadal starts at Roland Garros with a comfortable win against Hanfmann

The Spanish Rafael Nadal began his challenge to conquer a twelfth Roland Garros with a quiet victory, in three rounds (6-2, 6-1 and 6-3), against the German Yannick Hanfmann (180º), on the center court Philippe Chatrier .

Nadal, world number 2, overcame the first obstacle in 1 hour and 58 minutes and in the second round will play against fellow German Yannick Maden (114th), who beat Belgian Kimmer Coppejans (178th) 7-6 (7/0 ), 7-5 and 6-3.

Like Hanfmann, Maden comes from the qualifying rounds.

“It is always incredible to play at the Philippe Chatrier, the new court is very beautiful. Thank you all for your support. For me it is very nice to play in Paris again, in the most important tournament of my career ”, said Nadal on the court after his victory, making an effort to speak in French.

Hanfmann was playing the second game of his career in a Grand Slam main draw and had hardly any options against the far superior Majorcan.

In the first set, after a highly contested first game in which the German was about to break the Mallorcan’s serve, Nadal was much more inspired and, after two service breaks, won by a comfortable 6-2.

The party was already on track and did not change its tone.

The second set was a walk for Nadal, with a resounding 6-1, while in the third Hanfmann was where he presented the most resistance, although he also lost it (6-3), to say goodbye to the tournament in three sets against the great favorite .

Nadal, recent champion in Rome, continues to have good feelings, after a start to the season on clay that had set off alarms, as he chained eliminations in the semifinals in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid.

The clay king continues his tradition of starting well at Roland Garros, where he has never stumbled on debut. AFP
