Naomi Osaka says goodbye to Wimbledon at the first exchange

World number two Naomi Osaka was eliminated in the first round at Wimbledon after losing to Kazakh Yulia Putintseva in straight sets 7-6 (7/4), 6-2.

The Japanese, recently dethroned by Ashleigh Barty at the top of the WTA rankings, could have regained number one if she had a good result on the grass in London.

Who will continue as number 1 will be the Serbian Novak Djokovic, current Wimbledon champion, who went on Monday to the second round of the British Grand Slam tournament by beating German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 7-5 and 6-3.

South African Kevin Anderson, who last year reached the final where he had to bow to the Serbian, also beat the first round without surprises, beating Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-3, 6-4 and 6-2.

The Spaniards Roberto Bautista and Feliciano López also qualified, defeating the German Peter Gojowczyk by 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3 respectively, and the American Marcos Giron by 6-4, 6-2 and 6-4.

López arrives at Wimbledon with strength after proclaiming himself a week ago, being 113th in the ATP, double champion of the British Queen’s tournament, also on grass, where he won in singles and doubles together with Andy Murray of Scotland.

The Asturian Pablo Carreño and the Chilean Nicolás Jarry did not follow in his footsteps and were dismounted by the Australian Alexei Popyrin and the Italian veteran Andreas Seppi respectively.

The Argentine Leonardo Mayer and the Puerto Rican Mónica Puig did overcome this first day of the British tournament where this year there are few Latin Americans and the absence of Argentine Juan Martín del Potro due to injury stands out.

In the women’s draw, world number three Karolina Pliskova beat Chinese Lin Zhu (CHN) 6-2, 7-6 (7/4).
