Neuville, first leader in Sardinia after winning the inaugural superspecial
Belgian Thierry Neuville (Hyundai i20) is the first leader of the Rally Italy-Sardinia, round seven of the World Championship, after setting the best time in the only stage of the opening day, a 2-kilometer superspecial held on the old Ittiri motocross track.
Neuville, second in the 2017 World Cup, 22 points behind the leader, Frenchman Sebastien Ogier (Ford Fiesta), set a time of 2: 01.8 minutes.
The Belgian surpassed Estonian Ott Tanak (Ford Fiesta) by two tenths and his teammate in the Hyundai team, Spanish Dani Sordo, by four, who hours before was the best in the previous test (shakedown).
Ogier, winner this season in Monte Carlo and Portugal, qualified in fifth place, tied with fourth, Britain’s Elfyn Evans (Ford Fiesta), both nine tenths behind the first leader.
Thierry Neuville looks to Sardinia for his third win of the year after his victories in France and Argentina.
Friday’s itinerary includes a loop of four sections that will be covered twice for a total of 125.46 timed kilometers.
On Saturday there will be 143.16 kilometers divided into six stages. The last of them includes the famous ‘Salto Micky’, in which hundreds of spectators gather and is one of the attractions of this rally.
The last day, on Sunday, there will be only four short sections totaling 42.04 kilometers. In total, 19 stages are disputed with 312.66 km. timed. EFE
