The New York Mets reported that their Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes was absent without excuse from the game against the Braves in Atlanta and they have not been able to reach him.
«Yoenis Céspedes did not report to the stadium today. He did not contact management with any explanation for his absence. Our attempts to contact him have been unsuccessful, “the Mets said in a statement released at the start of the Atlanta game.
Cespedes, 34, played Saturday’s game between his team and the Braves at Truist Park in Atlanta, which he missed in four at-bats.
The Cuban slugger, a former player for the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers, has been chosen twice for the All-Star Game (2014 and 2016) and was a winner of a Gold Glove in 2015.
The unjustified absence of Céspedes is the latest incident in a turbulent start to the Major League Baseball season, marked by the serious impact of the coronavirus pandemic that forced the suspension of more than fifteen games. AFP (HN)
