The new world boxing champion, Nicaraguan Byron Rojas “El Gallito”, symbolically received the belt that crowns him as the 105-pound monarch of the World Boxing Association (WBA).
The delivery was made in Managua by the vice president of the WBA, Renzo Bagnariol, in the presence of Rojas’s attorney, Marcelo Sánchez.
Rojas, 25, became Nicaragua’s 12th world boxing champion, defeating former champion Hekkie Budler by unanimous decision (115-113) last Saturday in Johannesburg, South Africa.
“He honored boxing and won with tremendous plans, this is the first step, now the good begins,” said Bagnariol, during the event.
The “Gallito” specified that he will double his time for training, seek strategies and study his likely rivals, to retain his title.
At the moment, Rojas, also a veterinary student, has no news of upcoming fights, however, his attorney stated that there are negotiations for the first defense.
“There will be a statement from the WBA where a guide will be given on what the future of the cock will be for its next defense,” said Bagnariol.
Boxing is the second sport preferred by Nicaraguans, after baseball.
