Nicaraguan Ricardo Mayorga, 43, challenges Julio César Chávez junior
Ricardo ‘el Matador’ Mayorga, former world champion of the 147 and 154 pounds of the World Association of Boxing (AMB) and the World Council of Boxing (CMB), challenged the Mexican Julio César Chávez Júnior today through his promoter, Rosendo ‘el Búfalo’ Álvarez.
“‘El loco'”, as Álvarez calls Mayorga, “is not playing games” and is willing to confront Chávez “at whatever weight he considers,” he said.
Mayorga, who will turn 44 next October, is an eccentric character who made several million dollars by facing figures such as Oscar de la Hoya, Félix ‘Tito’ Trinidad, Fernando Vargas, Miguel Cotto and Shane Mosley between 2001 and 2015.
He generated controversy by dedicating strong words to his rivals and their mothers, getting on the scale eating, smoking in the ring or getting hit in the face in championship fights, showing no pain.
Álvarez, the promoter of ‘el Matador’, was also a two-time Nicaraguan champion.
The last fight of ‘el Búfalo’ was last April, without a title in dispute and that he won by knockout in the third round of Mexican Jaudiel Zepeda. EFE
