The three-time Formula 1 champion Niki Lauda, ​​who died last May, will receive a new posthumous tribute by naming from now on the award given each year to the best athlete in Austria.

The Austrian Sports Journalists Association (SMA) has decided to call the award given to the most outstanding athletes every year “Niki”, to commemorate one of the best sports representatives in the country.

Thus, the first “nikis” will be delivered on October 31 at a ceremony in Vienna.

“With Niki Lauda, ​​the Austrian sports world lost in 2019 one of its most charismatic figures. We want to pay tribute to the extraordinary athlete and the impressive personality of Niki Lauda ”, said the president of the SMA Hans Peter Trost, according to the APA agency.

The Austrian soccer team and the skiers Anna Fenninger and Marcel Hirscher – double and quadruple winners, respectively, of the World Cup – were the winners last year.

Lauda was a three-time Formula 1 champion (1975, 1977, 1984) and in 1977 he himself received this same award to which he now gives his name.
