Ohtani named MLB player of the year

Los Angeles Angels sensation Shohei Ohtani was voted American League Player of the Year and Outstanding Player by his Major League Baseball teammates during the union’s Players Choice Awards ceremony.

Philadelphia outfielder Bryce Harper was named the most outstanding player in the National League, the Major League Baseball Players Association said Thursday.

Toronto infielder Marcus Semien was awarded the Marvin Miller Man of the Year Trophy, given to the player who inspires leadership in others.

Mark Belanger, the first former player to be hired by the Association, received the Curt Flood Award for helping defend the interests of players and for his dedication to the union. Belanger, a former Major League shortstop, passed away in 1998.

Robbie Ray of the Blue Jays was named the most outstanding pitcher in the American League and Max Scherzer of the Los Angeles Dodgers as the most outstanding pitcher in the National League.

Baltimore first baseman and outfielder Ryan Mountcastle was selected as the AL’s Most Outstanding Rookie and Cincinnati second baseman Jonathan India took the award in the NL.

Orioles outfielder and first baseman Trey Mancini won the AL comeback of the year award. He returned to play after suffering from colon cancer.

Buster Posey, catcher from San Francisco, took him on the National after choosing to be absent in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and after having adopted premature twins. (AP)
