Portuguese rider Miguel Oliveira (KTM) took his second victory of the season in the Moto2 Grand Prix of the Czech Republic, at the Brno circuit, to storm the head of the world championship.
The Portuguese started from 4th place on the grid and surpassed by 70 thousandths at the end of a beautiful battle over Italian Luca Marini (Kalex), who started from pole, and by 525 thousandths over another Italian, Franco Baganaia (Kalex) .
“It was very tough, I didn’t fully expect to win today,” admitted Oliveira, who now leads the standings with a 2-point lead over Bagnaia and 53 over Spaniard Alex Márquez.
“I took a risk on the last lap, I’m very happy,” he added at the end of a race that was held in sweltering heat.
Winner of five races since the start of the championship, Bagnaia for his part admitted that “finishing third and losing the lead was not our goal today.”
“Now it is necessary to focus on the next race,” he assured.
The Moto2 test in Brno was marked by the abandonment of the Spanish Kalex riders, Alex Márquez, 3rd in the provisional classification, and Joan Mir, 6th in the table. The latter did not finish the first lap after an accident with two other drivers. AFP
