Orlando Magic name Jamahl Mosley as new coach

Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Jamahl Mosley will take over from Steve Clifford as head coach of the Orlando Magic, who did not qualify for the NBA playoffs.

“We would like to welcome Jamahl and his family to the Magic family,” Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman said in a statement Sunday.

“Within the NBA coaching community, Jamahl is considered a rising star,” he stressed. “We are looking forward to him leading our group.”

The 42-year-old Mosley spent the past seven seasons as an assistant to the Mavericks, where he worked closely with young star Luka Doncic.

He previously served four seasons as an assistant for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Mosley will relieve Steve Clifford, who left the team after missing the playoffs for the first time in his three seasons on the Orlando bench.

The Magic finished penultimate in the Eastern Conference, weighed down by serious injuries to important players like youngsters Jonathan Isaac and Markelle Fultz.

The Orlando franchise in March transferred its figures Nikola Vucevic (Bulls) and Aaron Gordon (Nuggets) in exchange for Draft rounds with which to build a competitive team in the medium and long term. (AFP)
