Osaka, world number one, falls in the third round of Roland Garros

The world number one, Naomi Osaka, was eliminated in the third round of Roland Garros when she fell against the Czech Katerina Siniakova (42nd in the WTA ranking) by 6-4 and 6-2.

With the elimination of the Japanese player, Roland Garros continues to lose its theoretical great favorites. Among the top six in the world rankings, only Romanian Simona Halep, current champion in Paris, managed to enter the round of 16.

Osaka had indirectly made sure to remain world number one at the end of this tournament when Czech number two Karolina Pliskova was eliminated on Friday also in the third round.

The 21-year-old Japanese player had been the winner of the last two Grand Slam events, the United States Open in 2018 and the Australian Open at the beginning of this 2019. Therefore, she will not be able to add a third big in a row.

Osaka had had two very difficult first rounds at this Roland Garros.

She suffered terribly in the first round to beat Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, who served twice to win the match.

In the second, Osaka also had to come back and work hard to beat former Belarusian world number one Victoria Azarenka in three sets.

Last year, Osaka had also lost in the third round, a round that it has never managed to overcome in Paris.

Her elimination clears the way at the top of the table for American Serena Williams, who is aiming to set a new record with a 24th Grand Slam title and who should have measured No. 1 in a hypothetical quarter-final.

Siniakova, champion of Roland Garros last year in the women’s doubles tournament, will face in the round of 16 against the American Madison Keys (14th) or the Russian Anna Blinkova (117th). AFP
