Pau Gasol affirms that it would be “incredible” to join his brother Marc in the Lakers

Once we learned that Marc Gasol was signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, speculation –and illusion– about seeing him dressed in gold and purple with his brother Pau, soared. In less than two weeks, just as Marc makes his debut with the Californian franchise, they will become the first brothers to wear the Lakers jersey. The achievement speaks for itself, but Pau wants more. The oldest Gasol would be delighted that his return to the NBA, if it turns out to be possible, would be on the team where he won the 2009 and 2010 rings.

“There is meaning and history in that possibility. I am not going to lie. It would be very special, and now that my brother is there, even more special. But now I am not in a position to be very demanding. I don’t have 10 offers on the table, ”he tells ESPN before commenting that he spoke to Marc during free agency.

“He had several teams that were interested. What he valued most was the opportunity to win another championship. Playing for the Lakers… This is a unique franchise. It is the opportunity of a lifetime, and it is very special for us to be the first brothers to play for the Lakers. It would be amazing if it ends up with a scenario where I can join the team at some point, ”he emphasizes.

Dreaming is always allowed –it would be more necessary–, but the context is not very good. Pau has not played a game since March 2019 and has since undergone two surgeries to repair stress fractures in his left foot; Ailment that appeared months before, exactly in the fall of 2018, when he was still a player for the San Antonio Spurs. Although we could see him training recently, so far he has not played any five against five. With these data, he himself is not prepared to return; so much so that he assures that after discussing with some teams the possibility of being in the training camp, he has chosen to continue with the conditioning before engaging in serious conversations with any organization.

Wants to have minutes

For Pau, going back to the slopes is not about something he wants to do anecdotally, but if it is the case he wants it to happen to play and not just look like a veteran voice in the locker room. “I want to have the opportunity to contribute, to feel necessary. It is not simply about being there. That doesn’t go with my personality. I want to enjoy, and the players generally enjoy playing. ” And when would that time come to return? He predicts that it could be soon. “I would love to be on an NBA roster again at some point, and it may not be far behind,” he warns.

A hard road

They are many months of work and as many moments in which when it seemed that his return was near, everything became complicated. In the early stages of his recovery, he could barely put his foot down. Then he had to strengthen it with exercises and even used a walking boot before starting to walk on soft surfaces. Pau admits that the simplest thing would have been to surrender. “There were good days and then difficult days where you say, ‘Is it really worth it? Maybe it’s time to let it go, ‘”Gasol said.
