The hitherto Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic will be the new coach of Girondins de Bordeaux, replacing Jean-Louis Gasset, a relief that occurs less than 10 days before the start of the French championship.
Petkovic, who led Switzerland to the quarterfinals of the last European Championship, where they fell on penalties against Spain, was the priority for the French club’s owner, the Spanish-Luxembourg businessman Gérard López.
The 57-year-old Croatian coach, born in Bosnia-Herzegovina and nationalized Swiss, will return to coach a club for the first time since leaving Lazio in Rome in December 2013. Later he became engaged to Switzerland, to replace the German Ottmar Hitzfeld
In Helvetic lands he has carried out the bulk of his career as a coach, with a stint at the Turkish Samsunspor.
Petkovic is known for betting on young players, something he has done in Switzerland and will have to do in Bordeaux, as the club is in a difficult financial balance that will prevent it from making large signings. EFE (HN)
