The top seed, the Czech Karolina Pliskova, reached the quarterfinals of the Prague tennis tournament on Wednesday after beating the Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova with a comeback in three sets and two hours and eleven minutes of fighting.
Pliskova, fourteenth in the world, beat Pironkova 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1). In the quarterfinals, they will face their compatriot Denisa Allertova, who caused the surprise against the French Alize Cornet, fifth favorite and whom she defeated 3-6, 7-5 and 6-2.
Another local tennis player, Barbora Strycova, third-seeded, also made it to the quarterfinals, beating Russian Elena Vesnina 6-3.
The second favorite has been eliminated, the also Czech Lucie Safarova, who lost in a first round duel 6-3, 2-6 and 6-4 against her compatriot Tereza Smitkova, who shortly after jumped back on the court to fall against the local Lucie Hradecka.
