Professional boxers could compete in Olympics

Professional boxers could compete in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games if the proposals of the governing body of that sport at the amateur level are approved.

The International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) discussed at its meetings this week in Manchester a proposal to amend the regulations limiting participation in the Olympics to amateur fighters.
AIBA President Ching Kuo Wu said after the meeting that the proposal could be ratified in a matter of months, perhaps even in time to be implemented at the Rio Games to be held in August.

“We want the best boxers to be in the Olympics,” Wu told Britain’s Press Association. He added that it is “entirely possible” for the changes to be implemented in time for Rio.
