Raonic leaves Federer out of Wimbledon final

Canadian Milos Raonic beat world number 3 Roger Federer in five sets (6-3, 6-7 (3/7), 4-6, 7-5, 6-3) to reach the final of the Wimbledon tournament, his first Grand Slam title match.

The world number 7, who had been surpassed in the 2014 semifinals by Federer, will face the British Andy Murray (2nd) or the Czech Tomas Berdych (9th) on Sunday in the final, who will fight this Friday for the second ticket.

The 1.96 meter behemoth managed the feat of overtaking the Swiss star for the first time in a Wimbledon semi-final, and also became the first Canadian to reach the final of the world’s most prestigious grass-court tournament.

«He hit the lines with his serve and his right hand. He did a great job. It’s something I want to forget, it hurts, I was so close, “said Federer.

In turn, he deprived the record holder of Grand Slam titles (17) of a 28th Grand Slam final, and of the possibility of winning a ‘bigger’ tournament again, which he has not achieved since Wimbledon in 2012.

“There was a small option and I took advantage of it. This is great news for Canada. I hope it will be even more important if I win on Sunday. I had problems in the third and in the fourth set, he was playing great tennis, ”said Raonic, assisted by the legendary John McEnroe on the grass tour.

With the world number 1 Serbian Novak Djokovic eliminated in the first round, Federer had a great chance of lifting a trophy of this size.

Federer was not far from making Raonic yield, however. He scored two sets and in another he had three break balls. But Raonic showed his patience and mental fortitude.

The Canadian, through his formidable winning returns in the twelfth game of the fourth set, reversed the trend as Federer appeared to be heading to his 85th win at Wimbledon. AFP
