Revolution breaks MLS points record

Tajon Buchanan scored his eighth goal of the season and the New England Revolution beat Colorado’s Rapids 1-0 on Wednesday night to break the MLS points record for a season, reaching 73.

New England has already secured the Supporters’ Shield trophy, which is awarded to the club with the highest number of points in a regular season. He surpassed the 72-in-34-game mark set by Los Angeles FC in 2019.

Revolution has a pending game in the regular season, at home against Inter Miami, on November 7.

Buchanan controlled Adam Buksa’s cross with his chest, and with two touches he escaped a defender and passed William Yarbrough with a shot from a difficult angle in the 74th minute.

Colorado secured a playoff spot on Saturday. He is third in the Western Conference with 55 points.

Also Wednesday, Argentina’s Lucas Zelarayán scored a goal and two assists as the Columbus Crew beat Orlando City 3-1 and retained their slim chances of advancing to the playoffs.

In a goal fest, Nashville beat Cincinnati 6-3 to secure a playoff berth. Costa Rican Randall Leal got a double for the Tennessee team.

Atlanta United beat Inter Miami 2-1, with a goal from Brazilian Luis Araújo and another from Venezuelan Josef Martínez.

New York City FC beat Chicago Fire 1-0, thanks to a goal from Argentine Valentin Castellanos. It thus surpassed Orlando in fourth place in the East, with 47 points.

With a header from Brazilian Sergio Santos in the 77th minute, the Philadelphia Union drew 2-2 at Toronto FC.

In other games, DC United beat the New York Red Bulls 1-0; Real Salt Lake beat FC Dallas 2-1, and Sporting Kansas City beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-0. (AP)
