Ricciardo and Red Bull impress at first Singapore tests

Australian Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) set the best time in the two free practice sessions of the Singapore Grand Prix, the fourteenth round of the Formula 1 World Championship, this Friday at the Marina Bay street circuit (5,073 km).

With a time of 1 minute, 40 seconds and 852 thousandths, using ultra-soft tires, Ricciardo improved the record of the circuit, which he himself had broken with the best time of the morning (1: 42.489).

Showing that the Red Bulls are very competitive on this narrow and winding track, second place went to his Dutch teammate Max Verstappen, 556 thousandths, ahead of World Championship leader Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) of Britain at 703.

Hamilton’s main rival, just three points behind in the championship, German Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari), was only 11th, 2 seconds 252 thousandths away.

Several pilots ran into the limits of the circuit in this session, such as Vettel, the Frenchman Romain Grosjean (Haas), the Canadian Lance Stroll (Williams), the Mexican Sergio Pérez (Force India) or the Spanish Carlos Sainz Jr, who will leave Toro Rosso for Renault next season.

The good performances of the German Nico Hülkenberg (Renault) stood out, 5º to 1 second 596 thousandths, and the McLaren of the Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne and the Spanish Fernando Alonso, sixth and seventh, to 1 second 649/1000 and 1 second 936/1000.
