The American driver Alexander Rossi, a rookie in the race, won this Sunday the hundredth edition of the legendary Indianapolis 500, of motorsport, in which the Colombian Carlos Muñoz was second.
Rossi won ahead of Muñoz and fellow American Josef Newgarden.
The 24-year-old American, who last year was in Formula One with the Manor team replacing Spaniard Roberto Merhi, succeeds Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya on the Indy500 record, who this Sunday had to abandon by accident on lap 64 of the 200 of which the test consisted.
Rossi, from the Andretti Herta Autosport team, beat Colombian Carlos Muñoz in the last laps, who had been at the forefront of the race, but entering the pit to refuel cost him the victory. Meanwhile, Rossi’s team decided to keep him on the track, even though he was running out of fuel, it turned out to be the winning strategy.
Last year Rossi participated in five F1 grands prix with the Manor Marussia team, and his best ranking was his twelfth place at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.
Muñoz, from the Andretti Autosport team, repeated again the same classification he had in 2013 when, as Rookie of the Year, he was also in second place.
Both drove vehicles with a Honda engine that was the great winner of the day.
Third place went to the American Josef Newgarden, while the fourth went to the Brazilian Tony Kanaan, who together with Muñoz and his compatriot Helio Castroneves, who led most of the test, always fought for the victory.
Two other Americans, Charlie Kimball and JRHildebrand, entered fifth and sixth, respectively, while Canadian James Hinchcliffe, who had won the pole position, took seventh place, followed by New Zealander Scott Dixon. Frenchman Sebastien Bourdais came in ninth and Australian Will Power was tenth.
The leader of the IndyCar season standings, Frenchman Simon Pagenaud, had to settle for 19th place. EFE
