Russell retains the title after defeating Escandón by knockout
American fighter Gary Russell Jr. maintained his World Council Featherweight title. Boxing (WBC) by defeating his challenger, Colombian Óscar Escandón, by technical knockout in seven episodes.
In the fight held at the MGM National Harbor Casino, in Oxon Hill (Maryland), Russell Jr. did not give Escandón a chance and retained the world crown in seven rounds.
Russell Jr. punished Escandon, 32, mostly using the power of his left hand and finishing with his right in a withering blow to the head.
Escandón hit the ropes and the match referee, Harvey Dock, was forced to stop the fight 59 seconds into the seventh round.
In the third episode Russell Jr. also dropped Escandón with punishment from the left hand to the head.
But from that episode Escandón seemed to recover points because the American looked tired after shooting all kinds of punishment at the Colombian.
In episode four, Escandón tried to take control of the actions, but his blows did not hurt Russell Jr., who in the fifth round recovered and returned to dominate the ring.
At the end of the fight, Russell Jr, leaves his mark at 28-1, with 17 knockouts, while Escandón has a record of 25-3, with 17 knockouts.
