The Russian Elena Rybakina won this Wednesday the French Caroline García, third favorite, and starred in the main surprise of the third day of the women’s tournament of tennis of Saint Petersburg (Russia), in which the local Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Elena Vesnina also fell.
Rybakina (450), coming from the previous phase, beat García (n.7) by 4-6, 7-6 (6) and 7-6 (5) in a long second-round match (2 hours and 27 minutes) in which the final third set was required.
The Czech Petra Kvitova (29) also surprised the Russian Vesnina (21), this time in the first round match, whom she swept off the court with a resounding 6-2 and 6-0 in just over an hour.
Also, said goodbye to the tournament Pavlyuchenkova, sixth seeded, who yielded to her compatriot Ekaterina Makarova, by a double 4-6.
The Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, sixth in the world and second favorite of the tournament, agreed to the quarterfinals, who beat veteran Russian Vera Zvonareva (n.197), 7-6 (6), 6-3.
The Russian Daria Kasatkina, eighth favorite and who beat the Frenchwoman 6-2 and 6-1, also passed Alizé Cornet to the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
