The Dominican Gary Sánchez and the Venezuelan Gleyber Torres sent home runs and left-hander CC Sabathia achieved his 250th victory of his career in the Major Leagues, in the victory of the Yankees against the Tampa Bay Rays with a 12 × 1 scoreboard.
Sanchez hit a near-three-run homer off last year’s AL Cy Young winner Blake Snell (4-6), ultimately defeating him.
Torres added a Grand Slam during a six-run seventh inning, and the Big Apple’s mythical ninth won his fifth straight game and extended his lead at the top of the AL East over the Rays to 3.5 games.
This was the second sweep for the Florida ninth this season, the other was in April against the defending champion Boston Red Sox.
Sabathia (4-4) pitched a one-run game allowed in six solid innings, striking out seven and allowing three hits with three walks.
The New York team had just three hits during the first six-run inning.
Sánchez’s home run was his 21st in 54 games this season.
The Yankees have homered in 22 straight games, three short of the 1941 franchise record. AP
