Coming back from an opening set down, American tennis player Serena Williams defeated compatriot Sloane Stephens, winner of the 2017 U.S. Open, and advanced to the knockout stages of the New York Grand Slam.
Williams, eighth in the WTA, beat Stephens (39) 2-6, 6-2 and 6-2 in one hour and 43 minutes of play on the Arthur Ashe court, the main court in Flushing Meadows.
In her race to equal the record for 24th Grand Slam titles, Williams will face Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the round of 16. AFP (HN).
