Serena Williams will reappear at the Italian Open

Recovered from a knee injury, Serena Williams will reappear at the Italian Open.

The director of the tournament, Sergio Palmieri, informed The Associated Press on Friday that he spoke with Williams’ agent and that the American “has already reserved hotel rooms and will be here a few days before” for the tournament that will be played between the 13 and 19 of May.

Williams has not played since retiring prior to a third-round game at the Miami Open in March due to a previously unknown left knee injury. He has not performed in Rome since claiming his fourth clay-court title in 2016, when he beat Madison Keys in the final.

The presence of Roger Federer, meanwhile, is a question mark.

According to his schedule, the Swiss star has only contemplated the Madrid Open next week as his only preparation tournament prior to the French Open, which kicks off on May 26.

The 37-year-old Federer has opted to skip the clay season in the past two years.

“Federer is scored to play, quite different from the last two years when he declined early,” Palmieri said. “The fact that he is registered implies that it is possible that he plays. But it is impossible to predict. … Knowing him, it is most likely that he will only come if he is playing well ”.

Although he has reached the final four times, Federer has never been crowned champion of the Italian Open, one of the few trophies he has failed to lift.

“Playing three consecutive tournaments on clay at his age is difficult,” said the president of the Italian Tennis Federation, Angelo Binaghi. “But I think it is something that will depend on the results in Madrid.” AP
