Shohei Ohtani has the green light to pitch and bat in 2021

The Anaheim Angels pitchers and catchers have already reported and with it came one of the first important confirmations of the team: the Japanese Shohei Ohtani has a green light to get on the hill and to hit.

Ohtani had a normal winter and is completely healthy after suffering a strained right elbow / forearm last year, a condition that allowed him to make just two starts.

Thanks to his recovery, the Angels will once again use Ohtani as a multifaceted player, although they did not detail the plan to follow in terms of time and the number of times he will pitch.

“Right now, I’m hearing that he will have no limitations,” Maddon said. “The reports that I have been receiving are very good, honestly. I’m just as excited to see this as everyone else. If we get Shohei on the right track, it’ll be a pretty good winter acquisition. We have seen what it is capable of ”. Ohtani, 26, was successful as a multifaceted player in his first season in the majors in 2018, when he was recognized as the American League Rookie of the Year.

That season, he hit .285 with 22 homers, 21 doubles and 60 RBIs in 104 games as a designated hitter, while going 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 10 starts.

In that way, he became the first player since Babe Ruth to make at least 10 starts as a pitcher and hit 20 home runs in a season. But since then, Ohtani has dealt with injuries, including Tommy John surgery that prevented him from pitching in 2019.

That season, he hit .286 / .343 / .505 with 18 home runs, 20 doubles and 62 RBIs in 106 games. However, he did poorly in the second half and ended up undergoing surgery on his left knee in September. (GG) (www.septimaentrada.com)
