Spencer Turnbull achieves ‘no-hitter’ for Tigres

Right-hander Spencer Turnbull (Tigers) achieved a ‘no-hitter’ on Tuesday against the Seattle Mariners in the Major Leagues and the Tampa Bay Rays plucked the Baltimore Orioles 13 × 6 with home runs by Brett Phillips, Austin Meadows and Mike Zunino, the latter with two.

Turnbull (3-2), who struck out nine, got his fifth no-hitter of the current season as he led the Tigers in a 5-0 win over the Seattle Mariners.

This was also the ‘zero hit; zero career ‘number eight in the history of the Tigers.

Turnbull, who led the majors with 17 losses two years ago, had never gone more than seven innings in any of his previous 49 starts in three seasons.

The five no-hitters through May 18 tie the 1917 season with the most in baseball history to that date.

Turnbull’s no-hitter was also the Tigers’ first since Justin Verlander’s in Toronto to the Blue Jays on May 7, 2011. (GG) (AFP)
