Sporting overwhelmed Besiktas

Sporting overwhelmed Besiktas

Under the hierarchy of Uruguayan defender Sebastián Coates, Sporting obtained oil in his visit to Besiktas in a momentous duel for the future of both clubs in the Champions League and that pushed the Portuguese team forward after winning 1-4.

Coates did pretty much everything. He even did homework that is not intended for a player in his position. Apart from standing as an impregnable wall in the rear of Sporting, he scored two of the three goals for his team with which he held his teammates at key moments of the duel.

With a couple of losses each in the locker and zero points after the first two days of Group C, there was no more room for error. None could get something positive against Borussia Dortmund and Ajax and they had to score yes or yes.

Sporting, more controlling and electric, took the lead in a round-trip duel in almost all its phases. The Portuguese team had one more head point than their rival and took the game to the points.

It was precisely the head of Coates who was in charge of opening the scoring after fifteen minutes after finishing off a corner kick extended by Gonçalo Inácio. The joy did not last long for Sporting, who could not avoid the reaction of Besiktas. The Turkish side, also from a corner and with a header from Canadian Cyle Larin, raised the score to 1-1 at 24.

However, Coates came to the rescue to score in a traced play: corner, Paulinho’s head extension and shot by the Uruguayan, who cleared up doubts with a second imperial header that goalkeeper Ersin Destanoglu could not save.

Before the break, Besiktas tried to minimize damage, but were met with an immense Coates and with the counterattacks launched by Pablo Sarabia. The Spanish media directed the transitions in attack of his teammates and took the third prize after converting a penalty. It was provoked, of course, by Coates, who rose again like a giant to finish off a corner that hit the Croatian Domagoj Vida in the hand.

The 1-3 was too much for Besiktas, who tried in the second half without aim. Especially the Belgian Michy Batshuayi, who touched the goal a couple of times. In one, he narrowly missed the ball. In the other, he met goalkeeper Antonio Adán, who intervened little but well.

Just in time to avoid trouble on the day Coates rescued Sporting, which still had time to raise the rent. After two shots to the post, Paulinho, on the third attempt, hit the horn with a goal from outside the area. In the end, the 1-4 gave an extra life to Rúben Amorim’s men, who added their first three points in the Champions League.
