Sulaimán gives Huichol belt to granddaughter of former president López Mateos
The President of the World Council of Boxing (CMB), Mauricio Sulaimán, today gave Giuliana Zolla, granddaughter of former Mexican president Adolfo López Mateo, the Huichol art belt that boxer Saúl «Canelo» Álvarez did not accept after defeating Julio César Chávez jr last May .
«It is the most beautiful belt in the history of the boxing, we closed the chapter and opened the one on the belt for the fight on September 16, “said Sulaiman shortly before, together with his sister Claudia, handing over the sash to the granddaughter of the Mexican president between 1958-1964.
The badge, with 40,000 pieces of chakira, bore the name of the deceased politician and was manufactured to deliver it to the winner of the lawsuit of the month between Chávez and Álvarez, but the latter, the winner, did not accept it and now the piece will be in the safekeeping of Giuliana Zolla before being exhibited at the Soumaya museum in the Mexican capital.
In a ceremony at a cultural center of the Coyoacán delegation, Mauricio praised the figure of López Mateo, lover and promoter of boxing, whom the World Council thanked for his support when he was president.
After the event, Sulaimán explained to the media that he had no difference with “Canelo” and recalled that he never speaks ill of a boxer, less of a Mexican so sacrificed.
“We made it (the belt) very positive, with a lot of affection and respect, and now the September belt chapter begins for the winner between Kazakh Guennady Golovkin, world middleweight champion, and Álvarez,” he said.
Mauricio commented that boxers have cycles and if you have money, fame and power, it is complicated, but the WBC is available for “Canelo” before, during and after his championship season.
Expanding on Alvarez, he insisted that he is a Mexican worthy of respect, admiration and support and predicted that his September fight against Golovkin will be the fight of the year.
“It has more powerful elements than the Chávez-Canelo lawsuit, it is a world title fight, Golovkin with 37 wins, 34 knockouts, no losses, against Álvarez on a roll,” he said. EFE
