The favorites did not fail in the Wimbledon tournament

The Swiss Roger Federer, the British Andy Murray and the Spanish Rafael Nadal debuted this Tuesday at the Wimbledon tournament with resounding victories over Damir Dzumhur, Mikhail Kukushkin and Thomaz Bellucci, respectively.

The great favorites for the title followed in the footsteps of the reigning champion, the Serbian Novak Djokovic, who sealed his pass to the next round on Monday, and advanced steadily in the third “major” of the season, which runs until the 12th of July at the elite All England Tennis Club in London.

It was Rafa, triumphant on British grass in 2008 and 2010, who was in charge of opening the pristine turf of track number one on Tuesday, in a clash against a left-hander like him, the Brazilian Bellucci.

The Spaniard needed two hours and 10 minutes (6-4, 6-2 and 6-4) to beat Bellucci in his debut at La Catedral, where he has not reaped the expected results in recent seasons.

Federer, winner of seven Wimbledon crowns, and who is chasing the eighth this year, and Murray, winner in 2007, played on the center court of the All England Club and defeated their respective rivals, also in three sets.

The Helvetian showed no mercy to the Bosnian Damir Dzumhur and crushed him 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 in just one hour and seven minutes of play, while the Briton, supported by the always lively English fans, decisively overcame Kazakh Mijail Kukushkin (6-4, 7-6 (3) and 6-4) in two and a quarter hours.

In addition to three of the four members of the «Big 4», the Czech Tomas Berdych, the Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the Frenchman Gilles Simon and the Spanish Feliciano López also reserved their place in the next round at La Catedral.

In the women’s draw, the current champion of the trophy, the Czech Petra Kvitova, started her title defense like a shot, beating the Dutch Kiki Bertens by a comfortable 6-1 and 6-0 in just 36 minutes of play.

In addition to Kvitova, second favorite at the All England Tennis Club, the Danish Caroline Wozniacki, the Russian Ekaterina Markova, the German Angelique Kerber, the Polish Agnieszka Radwanska and the Spanish Garbiñe Muguruza also agreed without too many problems to the next phase of the «major» British.

Although few, the surprises on the women’s side came from the resounding defeats of Simona Halep and Eugenie Bouchard, who say goodbye to Wimbledon, just like Carla Suárez Navarro, ninth favorite, did on Monday.

Eugenie Bouchard, finalist last year in London, continues her terrible streak this season and said goodbye to the first change, after falling to the Chinese Ying-Ying Duan (7-6 (3) and 6-4) in one hour and 24 minutes.

The third favorite, the Romanian Simona Halep, was defeated on the club’s number one court in two hours and 14 minutes by the Slovakian Jana Cepelova (5-7, 6-4, 6-3).

On the third day of Wimbledon, which begins on Wednesday, Novak Djokovic returns to the scene, facing the Finn Jarkko Nieminen in the central court, the American Serena Williams, who faces the Hungarian Timea Babos also in the main court, and the Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, current Roland Garros champion, who plays against the Dominican Víctor Estrella Burgos on court number one.
