The FIA World Council approved this Friday in Geneva the new qualification system proposed last week by the Formula One Commission, which establishes the successive elimination of the slowest cars during Q1, Q2 and Q3 until the two best pole is played in a heads-up.
Thus, Q1 will last 16 minutes, but from the seventh the slowest car will be eliminated and every 90 seconds the last ones will be discarded until 15 drivers are selected for Q2.
Q2 will be 15 minutes and the eliminations will start from the sixth. From there, every minute and a half the slowest car will fall to select the eight that will take part in the 14-minute Q3.
In the latter, after five minutes the eliminations will begin every 90 seconds until there are two drivers left, who will play the ‘pole’ in a heads up in the last minute and a half of the session.
All three sessions will end when the checkered flag is flown, not when the time is up.
