The Paraguayan Prosecutor’s Office investigates a possible escape of the accused in the Ronaldinho case

The Paraguayan Prosecutor’s Office is verifying whether the Brazilian Wilmondes Sousa Lira, accused of having given the former soccer player Ronaldinho de Assis Moreira and his brother Roberto the false passports to enter Paraguay last March, has abandoned the residence where he had to serve his house arrest .

The judge in charge of the case, Gustavo Amarilla, told Efe that the possible escape of the Brazilian “is still a rumor” since “officially” he has no communication.

“It is a diligence that the Prosecutor’s Office is already doing to verify whether the man actually violated his house arrest. This is subject to official verification. I still do not have the official certification in the case, “explained Amarilla.

The judge acknowledged that in the last hours he has received several inquiries from the media about the whereabouts of Sousa Lira and, as a result, contacted prosecutors to initiate investigations.

From the Public Ministry they have already begun to make the pertinent verifications to verify “if this leak actually occurred.”

Amarilla decreed in March the preventive prison of Sousa Lira, accused of criminal association, use of non-authentic documents and use of a public document with false content.

The judge upheld that decision in May, but a month later an Appeals Court reversed its ruling and granted house arrest to the Brazilian, who since then had to stay in an apartment located in a luxurious area of Asunción.

This Friday, several local media reported the alleged disappearance of Sousa Lira, still awaiting official verification, as the judge recalled.

“In the event that the Prosecutor’s Office or the Police verify that he is not there, that presumes a leak. The procedural system establishes that in these circumstances of non-compliance with any of the measures or the flight of a person, the procedural situation of a state of rebellion originates, which implies an arrest warrant for the fugitive, ”Amarilla explained to Efe.

Wilmondes Sousa Lira was arrested on the night of March 4 at the same hotel where Ronaldinho and his brother Roberto had stayed after arriving in Asunción to promote a solidarity event for a foundation led by businesswoman Dalia López.

In his investigative statement, Sousa Lira alleged that the documents were delivered to him by López, who is also a defendant but a fugitive, at the airport so that he could hand them over to Assis Moreira’s brothers.

The former Football Club Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Milan star left Sao Paulo together with his brother and business advisor with Brazilian documentation and in Asunción they exhibited the adulterated passports with their respective names.

Since then, Ronaldinho Gaúcho and his brother spent a month in preventive detention in a police station that serves as a jail, until on April 7 they were granted house arrest after a bond of 1.6 million dollars.

After spending four months in a hotel in the center of Asunción, Amarilla benefited them with the conditional suspension of the process and allowed them to return to Brazil.

The procedural exit forces Roberto de Assis, who was sentenced to two years in prison, to appear every four months before the Brazilian judicial authorities.

The two brothers had to pay a fine of about $ 200,000 as “social reparation” to terminate their processes, an amount that was allocated to the purchase of supplies and medical equipment to combat covid-19. EFE. (JL).
