The rain ruins the day at Roland Garros

Umbrellas, laments and fans waiting without being able to see Novak Djokovic or Dominic Thiem in action. This was the case at Roland Garros, where the rain prevented any minute from being played in the scheduled quarter-final duels in the men’s and women’s teams.

The organizers now face the challenge of being forced to reschedule the scheduled duels in the middle of the final stretch of the tournament.

The weather forecasts are better for Thursday, but that day the women’s semifinals were scheduled. One of them, between the British Johanna Konta and the Czech Marketa Vondrousova, had already been defined on Tuesday, but the identity of the protagonists of the other had to be defined this Wednesday with the last quarterfinals, Simona Halep-Amanda Anisimova and Asleigh Barty -Madison Keys.

In addition to those two matches, this Wednesday the last two quarterfinals of the men’s tournament were scheduled.

The number one Novak Djokovic had to face Alexander Zverev (5th) and Dominic Thiem (4th), runner-up last year, Karen Khachanov (11th).

On Tuesday, the rain had made its appearance, disturbing the program for the first time in this edition.

A storm forced an hour and ten minute interruption during the matches that Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer beat Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka, respectively.

This Wednesday, the only tennis that could be seen at Roland Garros was early in the morning at the junior tournaments and at the Legends Trophy, which is disputed by retired tennis figures. Neither of those matches could finish.

The start of the quarterfinal matches of the main draws was initially scheduled at 2:00 p.m. local time (12:00 GMT) and had to be delayed several times, from half an hour to half an hour, until at 4:30 p.m. (2:00 p.m. GMT) the definitive resignation to play was announced this Wednesday.

“The tournament management regrets to announce that due to unfavorable weather conditions no game will be played today at Roland Garros,” the organizers said.

On the two main tracks, the Philippe Chatrier and the Suzanne Lenglen, not a minute was played and the protective tarps that covered the track were never removed.

The last time that no match could be played due to rain during the day in the main draws at Roland Garros was on May 30, 2016.

To find the previous one, one must go back to the year 2000.

– Last year without a roof –

In the Parisian tournament, the rain is synonymous with a total tennis stoppage since it is the only event at the Grand Slam that does not have a retractable roof on any of its courts.

This year 2019 is the last in which in principle such a circumstance will occur, since by 2020 it is planned that the Philippe Chatrier center court will have that long-awaited roof, which would allow playing indoors.

Wimbledon debuted a retractable roof on its main court in 2009. It is also featured at the Australian Open in Melbourne and the US Open in New York.

In 2020, when Roland Garros has its headquarters with a retractable roof, it will continue even behind the rest of the ‘big’, which have at least two of their tracks with the capacity to be covered in case of need. In Melbourne there are already three.

At Wimbledon they still remember the traumatic editions of 1991 and 1996, where the rain made it very difficult to play the games in the first rounds, which were repeatedly postponed. In 1996 even the singer Cliff Richards improvised a small concert from the stands to liven up the wait.

At Roland Garros there were no music stars making up for the wait on a day completely ruined by rain.

Tennis players, organizers and fans hold their breath for heaven to give a truce on Thursday. AFP
